I chose this particular model as I wanted a narrow fireplace mantle that would support a mid-size TV. The case is hardwood, solid and attractive. The fireplace doesn't put out a ton of heat, but it takes the chill off (at the higher setting) and the flame effect is good - I particularly like that there is a dimmer switch for the flame, with several different settings. You can also run the flame effect w/o heat. The blower vents are at the bottom of front, and the rest of the unit (top/sides/back) does not get hot.
One issue: poor packaging. The box was shipped upside down (label on the bottom). Two pieces of foam only held the mantle in place, with no other covering. As a result, a couple pieces of the frame had loosened slightly. I also wasn't thrilled that staples instead of nails were used in construction. It wasn't a problem to knock them back together, but better packaging would have prevented this.
Second issue: design flaws. There are two hal ogen lamps that eventually must be replaced. They are hidden behind a panel with four screws, and then require two more metal pieces (each with three screws) to be removed - this should have easier access. Not to mention, the flame effect on mine did not work initially. After taking out the two bulbs to check they weren't loose, I had to unscrew the entire metal back (despite the warning labels) as I could clearly see the circuit board in the lower corner of the unit, and certainly didn't want to send it back if the only problem was a loose connection! Which it was, as it turned out.
So, in summary, I'm pleased with it & it serves the purpose, but definitely a couple issues the company could work on.
